Managing Your Finances
In the current recession money problems can seem insurmountable-which is why Credit Unions in Cork have taken the initiative in offering valuable advice. The credit unions have teamed up with MABS (Money Advice Budgeting Service) to offer advice to people who have found their ability to meet their financial commitments hit by less income-either due to a job loss or pay reduction or another change in circumstance. They've drawn up a leaflet, with guidelines on how to manage your financial debt-including advice on the steps to take to try and work your way back into the black, and a detailed budget sheet to start you on your way. There will not be an easy solution to your money problems-but more often than not , debt problems can be resolved with time and effort.
Credit unions have been a source of affordable credit in Ireland for
the past 40 years. We would ask our members, who might be
experiencing financial troubles, don't delay-come and speak to us today,
and see if we can help.
Log onto
www.corkcreditunions.com for a downloadable version of the Budget
Planner leaflet. Further assistance can be found with MABS by

International Credit Union Day
19 October 2006
International Credit Union Day is a specific annual occasion calling attention
to the impact of credit unions on the lives of millions of people. International
Credit Union Day honours the gifts and achievements of the many pioneers who
founded credit unions and their service groups. It is also important to pay
tribute to the many people who today continue to demonstrate the commitment that
is building new credit unions or sustaining and further developing existing
savings and credit cooperatives.
The international day of observance brings people together to reflect
upon their cooperative history, their credit union achievements and to
promote the credit union idea across the world. Celebrations in
different countries take place in many forms. For some credit unions,
its time to fundraise for Movement causes, hold membership drives,
launch youth campaigns and pay homage to the men and women who have
dedicated their lives to credit union development. The theme for this
years Credit Union Day is "Credit Unions; Making a World of Difference.
As part of the celebrations, we serve our members refreshments and
gifts throughout the day in honour of their importance to the credit
union movement.

40 Years a Growing
Muintir Clanna Caoilte Credit Union Ltd. Celebrates 40 years. 1966-2006
A very special occasion to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Clonakilty
Credit Union was held in the Credit Union on Monday 27th February 2006.
Clonakilty Credit Union sprang from the active Community Council in
1966. At that time, all such groups nationwide were inspired by Canon
Hayes and Muintir na Tire. A member of the neighbouring credit unions in
Bandon and Skibbereen came to give the Clonakilty Muintir enthusiasts
the benefit of their experience in setting up, as they had done a short
time previously. The movement towards credit unions generally, was in
its infancy in Ireland at that time. The first board of directors was
elected at that meeting. They were interested in establishing a union in
the area of influence of Clonakilty as their market town. They have
never looked back. Theirs has been a story of progress all the way. The
seed sown on that historic night has grown into a giant tree cherishing
a huge membership in its seventeen local communities, from
Courtmacsherry to Kilmacabea, and from Ardfield to Ballygurteen. All
these communities were guests at Clonakilty Credit Unions 40th
Anniversary launch and all had reason to celebrate because they were
recipients of very valuable presents – vouchers for Shanahans Nurseries
ranging in value from €500 to €1000. The vouchers were donated by
Clonakilty Credit Union for the purchase of trees for planting in their
respective communities. All seventeen communities have made huge strides
in recent years in local development, expressed. We can expect more
progress this year and subsequently as a result of these presentations.
Among the other distinguished guests at the party were Mr Barry Shanahan
and his staff, who have supplied West Cork and further afield with trees
and other garden materials for other garden material for several
decades. Shanahans Nurseries will provide the trees for this Credit
Union initative. Expect lots of planting in the Common Bond area of
Clonakilty Credit Union in the coming weeks. Mr Kevin Mullen presided at
the presentation and welcomed guests. He spoke suitable on the history
and significance of the occasion. Particular emphasis was placed on the
planting of trees, symbols of future growth. The past 40 years have seen
brilliant progress on the part of Clonakilty Credit Union. The forward
thinking of typified by the nights presentations said loud and clear
that the best is yet to come.

An Evening With Frank Clarke
As part of our 40th Anniversary Celebrations we held an art demonstration
evening with renowned artist Frank
Clarke. Frank is of course better associated with the television
programme "simply painting", and the success of this has been
phenomenal. This took place in Fernhill House Hotel on Friday 31st
March 2006 at 8pm sharp. Frank demonstrated how to paint a
landscape with watercolours and a raffle for charity was held for the
finished painting. A magnificent 750 Euros was raised from the
raffle and the painting was won by Annie O'Regan, Castlefreke,
Clonakilty.

Credit Unions Sponsor a Personal Information Pack
Emergency services across Ireland are set to benefit from the
launch of a pioneering yet simple initiative, PIP, which will provide
crucial information for emergency department staff in a medical crisis
as well as peace of mind for those ‘at-risk’ in the community. Developed
in partnership with Pfizer Healthcare Ireland, An Garda Siochana,
Muintir Na Tire, the Heath Service Executive, the Fire Service and the
West Cork, North Cork and East Kerry Credit Unions, the Personal
Information Pack (PIP) is a portable and secure pack recording a
person’s medical history. The PIP provides emergency staff with medical
and personal information of the owner which could facilitate a rapid and
more effective treatment.
The PIP was designed specifically for those ‘at-risk’ in the community
in the event of a medical emergency which may require emergency
department staff to have immediate access to a person’s medical
information. The PIP is a container stored in the fridge with the
medical history of the owner, which could include allergies or current
medication regimes. Emergency workers including An Garda Siochana, the
Fire and Ambulance Service have received training to recognise the green
sticker which those with a PIP place on the back of their hall door and
on the outside door of the fridge.
“The information contained in a PIP will prove itself invaluable to
emergency personnel in the event of a medical emergency,” commented Sgt
Eamonn Foley, Crime Prevention Officer, An Garda Siochana. “In addition
to protecting the well-being of people who are vulnerable in the
community, we must also strive to protect their health, we hope this
provides people with peace of mind.”
Dr Stephen Cusack, A&E Consultant, Cork University Hospital commented,
“Barriers to treatment can arise when a person is brought into A&E and
there are no family members present or if we cannot identify or contact
their local GP to ascertain crucial medical information. If we are
immediately aware of what might have caused the emergency, whether it is
a heart condition of otherwise, it would allow for more immediate and
effective treatment.”
PIP is especially beneficial to the elderly, vulnerable or those living
alone when an emergency arises which results in the holder being treated
in their home or in hospital. PIP holders are encouraged to bring the
pack with them for GP or hospital visits so and in the advent of
medications changing, the updates are carried out immediately. “PIP is
an extremely valuable initiative not least because it provides the
holder with the peace and security that in the event of an emergency
their doctor or the emergency department has instant access to crucial
information.” Commented Ms Lorraine Dorgan, Assistant C.E.O. Age Action
Ireland.
“With 13 Credit Unions supporting this project the launch of PIP affirms
our commitment to the health and wellbeing of the community. We hope
that the value of PIP is recognised and adopted across the country which
could add a new dimension to emergency medical care in Ireland. The fast
and effective treatment which could arise from PIP means we are giving
peace of mind to the community,” commented Mr Finbarr Barry,
representing the Credit Unions.
The Credit Unions supporting the project are Ballincollig, Bandon,
Bantry, Berehaven, Clonakilty, Dunmanway, Kinsale, Skibbereen, Macroom,
Millstreet, Newmarket, Kanturk and Rathmore.
More about PIP!
PIP is a plastic container with an insert with relevant medical or
personal information about the owner
Information on the insert includes a person’s medication, allergies,
next-of-kin etc
The information is input by a health professional
PIP comes with sticker to alert emergency services and is placed on
the inside hall door and fridge
A key ring is also provided to enable emergency staff to identify them
easily
PIP is being distributed to the elderly/vulnerable, person’s living
alone and those ‘at-risk’
PIP is being distributed via Garda Community Groups and Muintir na
Tire and will eventually be available in GP surgeries and Pharmacies

International
Credit Union Day 2005
International Credit Union Day is a specific annual occasion calling attention
to the impact of credit unions on the lives of millions of people.
Credit Unions: Members Make It Happen.. is the theme of this year's
International Credit Union Day, and is celebrated on the 20th October
2005. It brings people together to reflect upon their co-operative
history, credit union achievements and to promote the credit union idea
around the world. We traditionally offer refreshments to all
members who visit our credit union office on this significant day.
It is a day of celebration, and of honouring the success of the credit
union movement in Ireland and worldwide. A great day was had
by all who visited the credit union and thank you to all our valued
members for sharing in the celebrations with us.

Cork
2005 Credit Union Residencies Programme
As part of Cork 2005 Credit Unions throughout Cork City and County have
come together to create a unique initiative whereby artists in all
disciplines can work together with local communities with and aim to
create a necklace of exhibitions, plays and performances throughout the
city and county. As a result of this an Irish artist , Pauline Agnew
undertook a 6 month residency with a group of African and Caribbean
Asylum Seekers currently being accommodated in Clonakilty. The result of
this is a residency is public art project titled “Elsewhere”.

Members of the Asylum Seekers Involved in the Exhibition.
Also included are: Mr Brendan Quinn Chairman Cork Chapter XI of Credit
Unions, Mr Peter Walsh Deputy Lord Mayor of Clonakilty and Catherine
Atkinson Director of CREATE.
“Elsewhere” refers to the experience of being an asylum seeker in
Ireland and also to the experience of a national identity influx as
Ireland moves from being a mono-cultural to a mulit-cultural state. The
result of this is a series of public context orientated exhibitions
which will take place in and around Clonakilty from 1st -30th July 2005
and will consist of a series of 12 artworks which will be found in those
initial meeting points between the outsider and the community, e.g. the
shops, hotels, churches etc.
The official launch of this project took place on Thursday 30th June
2005. Those in attendance included Mr John Long, Director of the
Irish League of Credit Unions, the Deputy Lord Mayor Mr Peter Walsh, and
Urban and County Councillors were represented by Maura Cal McCarthy, Joe
Coleman, Cionnaith O’Suilleabhain, Anthony McDermott and also Mr Donal
O’Rourke. Also present were representatives of Clonakilty Business
Association, Roy & Margaret Maguire Clonakilty Lodge, Pauline Agnew,
Artist, Catherine Atkinson Director of CREATE, Chariman of Cork Chapter
XI of Credit Unions Mr Brendan Quinn, and members of Cork Chapter XI
Marketing Committee. Pauline Agnew, the artist involved in the project
explained further the truly unique exhibition that is “Elsewhere”.
Pauline has been based in West Cork for nearly two years now. An artist
and a multimedia producer, she holds a degree in fine art from the
National College of Art and Design and a Masters in Multimedia from the
Dublin Institute of Technology. She explained that “this exhibition
differs to typical art exhibitions in so far as that the art is situated
in different venues throughout the town of Clonakilty, in those meeting
places between the outsider and the community, e.g. the shops, churches,
hotels etc. A map showing the locations of all the exhibits is available
in the tourist office and in participating outlets. A comment/visitor
book is available for signing in the offices of the Credit Union , Kent
Street .” Pauline then thanked all those involved in the project,
especially the 15 asylum seekers involved, without whom none of it would
have been possible. She also paid special tribute to Roy & Margaret
Maguire of Clonakilty Lodge who “do tremendous work on a day to day
basis”, and to Clonakilty Credit Union who “provided much needed support
to the project, administratively and financially at a crucial stage.”
Mr Kevin Mullen, Chairman of Clonakilty Credit Union, then went on to
make a presentation of a Claddagh Necklace, symbolising the friendships
that have built up throughout the project to the 15 asylum seekers
involved. A presentation was also made to Pauline Agnew in recognition
of the commitment she made to the project and of her unstinting belief
in it at all times. Mr Kevin Mullen thanked all those involved for
allowing Clonakilty Credit Union to be a part of such an exceptional
event and invited everyone to enjoy the refreshments and entertainment
available.
A truly multi-cultural evening had by all in Clonakilty Credit Union.
The Asylum Seekers involved in the project attended in their bright and
beautiful traditional costumes. They also prepared their own traditional
food which was tasted and enjoyed by all.
SSIA Maturity
SSIA's (Special Savings Incentive Account) were commenced between 1st
May 2001 and 30th April 2002. The scheme is a five year savings
scheme in which the Exchequer tops-up, by way of a tax credit,
subscriptions made by an individual to his or her SSIA. The
maximum contribution is 254 Euros per month. The value of the Exchequer
top-up is 25% of the subscription amount. An SSIA matures at the
end of a 61 month period. While an individual is entitled to make
monthly subscriptions to his/her SSIA for 60 months, maturity does not
occur until the end of the 61st month. The reason for this
additional month is to give time for the financial institution to obtain
the tax credit in respect of the subscription made in the 60th month.
There are two obligations on the SSIA holder at maturity:
1. Each SSIA holder is obliged by law to make a declaration in
order to mature his/her SSIA. This declaration is made on an SSIA
4 form which will be forwarded to each SSIA Account holder at least 3
months prior to their SSIA Account maturing. This must be signed,
dated and returned to the financial institution by the account holder
prior to the maturity date.
2. Each individual is also obliged to pay tax at the rate of 23%
on the income earned by the SSIA. The financial institution will
calculate the relevant liability and pay it to the Revenue on their
behalf.
A detailed list of commencement dates and maturity dates is outlined
below.

There was a great turnout for this event, with nearly 25 teams taking part. On the day, the atmosphere in the hall was one of great anticipation and excitement. It was great to see parents and siblings supporting the teams. The teams took their places at 3pm and some light refreshments were served to aid brain power! Although some of the questions proved to be quite challenging, all the teams still achieved high marks. Unfortunately though there has to be a winner. Hearty congratulations to them. They will now go on to represent us at the next round of the quiz which will be held in the Rochestown Park Hotel on Sunday 6th March '05. We wish them well, and remember its not about winning but about participating!!
