Tommy Fleming Concert

As part of the 40th Anniversary Celebrations of Muintir Clanna Caoilte Credit Union Ltd., they organised and promoted a Tommy Fleming Concert in aid of the restoration of the Churches in the Parish. What an Exciting evenings entertainment was in prospect for over 1000 fans who gathered in Clonakilty Parish Church, for the Concert featuring the hugely popular tenor voiced Tommy Fleming who is currently packing full houses all over Ireland.  This was a sell out Concert in a splendid setting especially lit for the occasion.    Many candles decorated the altar creating a wonderful backdrop for the concert.  Tommy was accompanied on stage by three violinists and a cellist, while another member of the group, Derry Alan played the guitar and tin whistle. The musical director Dave played keyboard. Tommy’s opening number “From A Distance” set a very high standard which was maintained throughout the evening. Tommy’s renditions of popular classics from his repertoire such as “ Your Raise Me Up”(Brendan Graham), “Bright Blue Rose”(Jimmy McCarthy), “Bridge Over Troubled Water”(Paul Simon), “Hard Times”(Stephen Foster), “So Strong”, “Angel”, “You’ve Got A Friend”, and a specially arranged version by Tommy himself of “Danny Boy”, had the appreciative audience begging for more.

Guest of honour on the night was the President of the Irish League of Credit Unions, Anne O’Byrne who earlier in the night made a presentation to the   five existing founding members of Muintir Clanna Caoilte Credit Union Ltd.  In commemorating the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Credit Union movement in Clonakilty, Anne paid tribute to the courage and foresight of the people who studied and worked so hard against huge offs to provide people at that time with the means to save and thereby allow others to borrow.  Recipients were Rev Fr Tom O’Riordan PP Kilbrittain, Mr Ml McCarthy, Tawnies, Mr Dan O’Hea, Dunmore, Mr Donal O’Reilly, Mayfield, Cork, and Ms Kitty McCarthy, Garralacka who unfortunately was indisposed on the night.
